Why Insulate a Metal Building? Metal conducts heat and cold more readily than wood, which means an uninsulated metal building can be uncomfortably hot in summer and bitterly cold in winter. Adding insulation solves both problems while also reducing condensation (sweating) on the interior of the panels — a common issue with uninsulated metal structures. R-values of R-13 to R-19 are common for walls, and R-25 to R-38 for roofs.
