What Does Steel Gauge Mean? Steel gauge refers to the thickness of the steel tubing used in a metal building's frame. Counter-intuitively, a lower gauge number means thicker steel. So 12-gauge steel is thicker and stronger than 14-gauge steel. Most metal buildings on the market use either 14-gauge or 12-gauge steel for their structural framing. Understanding the difference helps you make a smarter buying decision — especially if your building will face heavy snow, high winds, or demanding use. 14-Gauge Steel 14-gauge steel tubing has a wall thickness of approximately 0.075 inches. It is the industry standard for residential metal buildings — carports, garages, barns, and storage buildings. A well-engineered 14-gauge building handles normal wind and snow loads across most of the continental United States without issue.
